Picture Lights FAQ
How big should a picture light be in relation to the picture?
The size of a picture light should be determined by the size of the picture that it is illuminating. Generally, picture lights should be between a half and about two-thirds the width of the frame. For portrait pictures, a light that is about half the width of the frame is ideal. For landscape pictures, a light that is about two-thirds the width of the frame is usually recommended.
How high should a picture light be above a picture?
The general rule of thumb is to place the light between 2 and 6 inches above the artwork. You should aim for an even spread of light across the picture, rather than focusing on one part. Read our guide for further guidance.
How to light a picture on the wall?
There are many options for lighting up your artwork, from ceiling mounted accent lights, track lighting, to the more obvious choice of picture lights.
Are LED picture lights safe for artwork?
Yes, LED picture lights are an excellent choice for illuminating artwork. LEDs produce very little heat and no harmful UV rays, making them much safer for paintings, photographs, and prints compared to traditional bulbs. They also offer long-lasting, energy-efficient performance without risking damage to your treasured pieces.
Can I use a picture light for a mirror or decorative object?
Absolutely! Picture lights aren’t just for artwork – they can also be used to highlight mirrors, sculptures, and other decorative features around your home. They provide a soft, focused glow that draws attention without overpowering the room.
Can I angle or adjust my picture light?
Yes, many picture lights come with adjustable heads or arms that allow you to direct the light exactly where you want it. This is especially useful for reducing glare and ensuring even illumination across the entire artwork.
Lighting plays a pivotal role in defining a restaurant's ambience, influencing both mood and dining experiences. Thoughtful lighting design can transform an ordinary space into an extraordinary one, leaving a lasting impression on guests.
The art you place around your home is important. Whether it’s a piece you’ve made, a treasured commission, or a piece that’s been in your family for many years, the art on your walls tells a story and expresses who you are.
If you've ever visited a museum, art gallery or stately home, then chances are you'll have seen artwork on the walls illuminated by picture lights. This is a great way to draw attention to a particular piece of artwork, whilst enhancing the lighting and visual appeal of a room.
